Religious Service

On March 29, 2009, I went to St Paul’s Church, Nanjing, it was on 396 Taiping Road, Nanjing 210002, and I went there with Doria, Sima, Nelly and Winona. We arrived there at about 10 o’clock. I knew a little about religion by books and movies, but I had never been to church, so I decided to experience the church.
Firstly, the glee club sang the prelude: The Lord is in His Temple. But I could not understand well. Secondly, Abba let us call to worship; it was similar to Chinese juration, thirdly, many people read hymn: Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me. They read tidily. Then Abba read the responsive reading for us, there were many people staying at the church, but no one said anything when Abba was reading, they all respected God, I could feel the spirit of the religion. The scripture had a comparison. Old Testament: Jeremiah, Reader: This is the word of the Lord; All: Thanks be to God; New Testament: John, Reader: The Gospel of the Christ; All: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ. However, the Apostles ’ Creed always made me feel uncomfortable, it always encouraged us to believe God, but I knew a little about God, so I couldn’t accept him comfortably. There were still many programs, I liked the hymn called Jesus, I Come. I could sing a part of the hymn.
In all, I liked the experience, because it made me know more about religion. However, I found it was boring; it always let us read and read, it seldom encouraged us to do, I just sat at the church and listened. But I would not rebel the religion, I still hoped that God could bless I.

Go to a Performance

On December 19, 2008, I went to watch a drama called “Taming of the Shrew”, it was on at the auditorium of our school, the actors and the actresses were the students of GCA.
I went to watch the drama with my classmates; they were Doria, Nelly, Winona and Sima. We arrived there at 6 o’clock, but the drama would be on at 7 o’clock, so we waited there. After I entered GCA, it was my first time to watch a long drama acted by students of GCA, I felt excited about the drama, so I decided to watch it.
The play begins with a framing device, often referred to as the Induction, in which a drunken tinker named Sly is tricked into thinking he is a nobleman by a mischievous Lord. The Lord has a play performed for Sly's amusement with a primary and sub-plot. The main plot depicts the courting of Petruchio, a gentleman of Verona, and Katherina, the headstrong, obdurate, and eponymous shrew. Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship but Petruchio tempers her with various psychological torments - the "taming" - until she is an obedient bride. The sub-plot features a competition between the suitors of Katherina's less intractable sister, Bianca.
I liked the drama, because it was really interesting, the actors and actresses act very well. There were many changes in the drama and the story line was attractive, it always took me into the story, so I thought the drama was exciting.
In all, I was satisfied with the drama, I was proud of GCA students; I thought we would do better in the future!

Participate in a Service Activity organized by a GCA teacher

On Saturday morning, I was arranged in a group to study cooking, our teacher was French, she taught us to cook muffins, and the muffins always were eaten on Christmas Day. I had never eaten them before.
Firstly, we needed to prepare 4 or 6 bananas, 4 eggs, 160g butter (with salt), 140g dark brown sugar, 300g flow, 2 packets of yeast and chocolate. These materials could make 10 or 12 muffins.
Before cooking, just heat the oven (220°). In a big bowl, mix the butter and the sugar, then add the eggs and smashed bananas, mix again. Finally, add the flow and the yeast, keep on stirring. When we worked here, we all thought the product was disgusting, the color was unpleasant. So I began to worry about that. Then keep some butter to put in the bottom of the muffins ran. Add a layer of the mixture inside, and before adding the other one, just put a lot of chocolate in the middle. And put inside the oven. We had finished the program, I was expectant. We waited and waited. At last, our French teacher sent a muffin to each of us. Even though the program was disgusting, but the muffin was quite delicious! I liked it very much!
I thought cooking was interesting and meaningful, because we needed to prepare the materials by ourselves; the time we worked together was funny, too! The experience could help us to understand cookers, it could help us to grow up, too!

Volunteer/Work Experience

On April 30, 2009, I went to old people’s home to do 10 hours’ volunteer work, I had my grandparents, and I liked to talk to them, so I thought I could work well at old people’s home. This time I still worked with Nelly.
When Nelly and I arrived at old people’s home, the leader arranged us to take care of old people of the second floor, when we stood on the second floor, we saw an old woman sitting on the wheelchair, she was hard to move. We looked at each other, we both wanted to help her, but we were shy to do this, it was my first time to work at the old people’s home, I still felt a little bit nervous even though the old people all looked kind. But finally, we walked to the old woman, because the old woman was too helpless, we felt pitiful about her. We introduced ourselves to the old woman, and then we helped her to move, we talked to her and enjoyed the sunshine at the same time, we kept smiling the whole way. By talking to the old woman, we knew about her life, she was tragic, her son seldom visited her, she felt lonely for staying at old people’s home. So Nelly and I told jokes to her, we sang songs for the old woman, we chat with each other, we just hoped the old woman would not feel painful because of loneliness. When we saw her smiling, we both felt relaxed, too! We were happy to help the old woman.
After sending the old woman to her bedroom, we continue to work, we found there were many old people like the old woman, and they all needed care, so we talked to them, we told them something interesting happened at our school, we tried our best to answer their questions, some of them were too old to move, they were look forward to seeing the view outside, so Nelly and I used cell phone to take photos of the scenes around the old people’s home, we showed these photos to the old people, they were very satisfied. We helped them to sun clothes, clean the bedrooms, we also played games with the old people; they all enjoyed the time with us. We didn’t feel tired at all, because we helped many old people.
By working for the old people, I think we should care more about old people, we should not leave them at the old people’s home, they don’t want money, they don’t want a good environment to live, they just want attention, they hope that they can see their children’s faces every day. Before doing the volunteer, I cannot know about my grandparents’ feelings, but now, I know that if I refuse to talk to them, they will be lonely and sad, because they love me deeply and they need me. However, when you chat with old people, you need to pay attention to the skills, they are too old to hear you clearly, so you should be patient, if you don’t want to repeat your words, and they will be hurt by you. I think if we pay more attention to the old people, the sadness and loneliness will be less and less.
